The Pistons

It was announced earlier this week that Ben Wallace is going to be traded to the Chicago Bulls. He became a free agent at the end of last season and many Pistons fans thought he was going to return to the Motor City. He was the anchor on Detroit's defense but contributed little to the offensive cause.

Time will only tell how well of a fit Big Ben will be in Chicago, but another question is how good are the Pistons going to be without Wallace. This is a team that had went to two consecutive NBA finals and last year, even though they didn't make the finals, they ended the regular season with the best record and set a franchise record for most wins. And most of the Pistons success was because of their stellar defense. When they became more offensive minded, they looked weaker. No doubt. So with Wallace gone can the Pistons remain one of the best teams in the NBA?

It looks like the other four Piston starters will be back next year but there is probably going to be a lot of changes with the bench. The bench players proved to be ineffective during the playoffs with only Antonio McDyess and Lindsey Hunter showing any real effectiveness. With Wallace gone McDyess might be the one to step up into his place and I'm sure that he's comfortable as a starter, if he can stay healthy through an 82 game season. If McDyess is going to be the new starter then the Pistons are going to be a higher tempo, less defensive kind of team. This move would also further weaken their bench. Not only that, Lindsey Hunter and Tony Delk are both free agents. If they both leave, Detroit is going to have to put up some help wanted signs.

Bobcats Sign Adam Morrison

The Charlotte Bobcats announced that they have signed their first round draft pick Adam Morrison. The Bobcats selected Morrison with the third overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft held on June 28.

“We are pleased to sign Adam and to get him on the basketball court with our team,” Bobcats General Manager Bernie Bickerstaff said. “He is a quality young man and a fine talent who we are excited to have as part of our organization. We have already seen how his skills will benefit our team and how competitive he is on the court.”

The 6-8, 205-pound forward is participating with the Bobcats entry in the Orlando Summer League from July 10-14 and then will be one of 23 selected players for the USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team program that begins training camp on July 19 in Las Vegas.

“I am glad to sign my first contract and start my NBA career here in Charlotte. It has been a lifelong dream to play in the NBA,” Morrison said. “I look forward to doing whatever I can to help the Bobcats take the next step as we build towards a championship.”

Marquis Daniels Has No Hard Feelings

Marquis Daniels said today that he saw his time with the Mavericks coming to an end as his opportunities on the court dwindled under Avery Johnson.

It was a steady decline in responsibilities on the court after the departure of Don Nelson that ultimately led to the Mavericks trade of Daniels to Indiana for Austin Croshere.

"I got to do a lot of different things on the floor under Nellie," Daniels said. "When Avery came in, things changed. I didn't get a chance to do as much out on the floor.

Ben Wallace Traded

For the last six years, Ben Wallace has been the face of the Detroit Pistons. No more.

A league source told ESPN.com Monday night that Wallace has told the Pistons he has accepted an offer from the Chicago Bulls.

While exact details are unavailable, the offer is thought to be a four-year, $52 million deal.

A deal can't become official until July 12, when the salary cap is set for the 2006-07 season and exact contract values can be computed.

The move will come as a shock to Pistons fans who thought the chances Wallace would bolt from Detroit were slim to none.

The Pistons came out of the gate Saturday offering Wallace a whopping four-year, $48 million deal, but they told the four-time defensive player of the year that it was their final offer.

The signing clearly upgrades the Bulls' front court, albeit at an exorbitant price. The Bulls will have to use roughly $13.5 million of their projected $16.7 million in cap space to secure Wallace.

However, Wallace adds the veteran toughness and defensive presence the Bulls felt they lacked up front.

The move puts the Pistons in a difficult position.

They lose Wallace for nothing and don't have anything more than the $5.1 million mid-level exception to offer to potential replacements.

The Pistons may opt to beef up their backcourt and to move to a more up-tempo style with Rasheed Wallace at five and Antonio McDyess at the four.

The most crucial phase for the Cavaliers will begin Saturday, when the organization will have the opportunity to offer LeBron James a five-year contract extension that will keep him in Cleveland through 2012. He is signed for 2006-07 and will earn about $5.8 million.

If James decides not to sign, he would become a restricted free agent next summer and an unrestricted free agent in 2008.

James, during recent interviews, said he wants to remain in Cleveland and help bring the city its first major professional sports championship since 1964.

The Cavs will make James an offer Saturday, and he cannot sign until July 12. The entire city will hold its collective breath during the wait.

Wade Delivers on Others' Promises

It wasn't Dwyane Wade who said he envisioned a parade down Biscayne Boulevard back in 1995, when he was hired to bring a championship to Miami.

That was Pat Riley's pseudo pledge.

It wasn't Wade who stood in front of AmericanAirlines Arena upon his arrival in 2004, when he promised the considerable gathering of fans that he would bring a title to Miami.

That was Shaquille O'Neal's guarantee.

Yet there was Wade, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter and bringing his team back from 13 down to help deliver on those promises.

There was Wade, scoring 43 points, his best playoff game ever -- including the last two nerve-wracking free throws with 1.9 seconds on the clock -- to help deliver on those promises.

There was Wade, scoring 36 more in the final game of the season, including four more huge free throws, to help deliver on those promises.

And there was Wade, accepting the NBA Finals MVP trophy in the center of the American Airlines Center floor, after he delivered on those promises.

It wasn't Wade who was supposed to be the main reason the Heat is a championship franchise. Not in 1995, and not in 2004.

But now that Wade has done it, the 6-4 guard in just his third year in the NBA has catapulted himself from a rising superstar to a still-dribbling legend. His 34.7-point scoring average in the Finals was more than even Michael Jordan in his first trip to the championship round -- and those comparisons were being tossed around even before Wade completed his magical run to a title.

And now it's Wade that has people believing that the promise of another championship is very much a possibility.

''He just took it to another level,'' Riley said of Wade. ``You all witnessed it. You all watched it. Players like that are very hard to come by, and to watch them grow right in front of you, you know, he's making his legacy in his third year. So, I mean, we are so blessed to have him.''

Heat Hungry for Next Year

Shaquille O'Neal took his usual position as master of ceremonies atop the stage outside AmericanAirlines Arena for the Heat's championship celebration.

He has, after all, done it three times before.

The four-time NBA champion made fans chant ''One more year'' for Alonzo Mourning, which probably made Mourning a little uncomfortable. He made his 61-year-old coach dance, which made everyone uncomfortable. And he gave an estimated crowd of 200,000 goose bumps with his famous ''Can you dig it?'' bellow.

And he promised they could do it all again soon. Very soon.

''We're going to do it again next year,'' O'Neal said. ``Yeah, I said it.''

Three days after the Heat won its first NBA title with a Game 6 defeat of the Dallas Mavericks, there was plenty of optimism that the team was well-equipped to make a repeat run next season.

But despite O'Neal's promise of another title, there remain questions about who will return to be part of that title. The most significant question mark being Pat Riley, who has given no indication whether he will return to coach the team next season.

Addressing the media Friday, Riley said he didn't want to address the question.

''Don't ask me that,'' Riley said with a smile. ``I can't answer that right now. I just want some time, that's all. I just want some time.''

Addressing the fans afterward, Riley may have provided a bit more insight as to which way he was leaning.

''We'll definitely see you again next year,'' Riley said. ``We'll be back.''

Heat Focus on Sustained Success

Since 1984, only six franchises (Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Bulls, Rockets and Spurs) had won NBA championships before the Heat broke into the group.

In that span of 22 years, a team has repeated the following year six times.

If the Heat is going to join that even more elite classification, it will have to address a few roster questions and probably tweak a team that came together at just the right time.

Some questions will be easier to answer than others.

• Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade: The only real issue among the Heat's pair of franchise players is Wade's contract extension, which he is eligible to sign this offseason. Depending on the league's annual salary-cap adjustments, Wade's extension can be for five years between $75 million to $85 million, which would kick in after next season and keep him under contract through the 2011-2012 season.

Unless O'Neal decides to retire before his contract expires, that means the two will be teammates through at least 2010, the final year of O'Neal's five-year, $100 million contract he signed last offseason.

• Udonis Haslem, Jason Williams and Antoine Walker: These three starters are each under contract past next season, meaning only a trade would force them to wear another uniform next season.

Haslem is signed through the 2010 season, Walker's contract features a team option after 2009 and Williams has two more years on his current deal. Williams will provide the most significant concern of the three because he is scheduled to undergo surgery to relieve the tendinitis problems in his right knee.

Mavs Look to Future

"Cleanout Day" is usually the most depressing day of the season. Players stuff sneakers that once squeaked on the practice court into trash bags and pack up for the summer.

Several never return.

The Mavericks said their heartfelt goodbyes Thursday, two days after the greatest season in franchise history hit an abrupt end. The NBA championship left American Airlines Center with the Miami Heat, leaving the Mavs more than three months to get over the regret.

"As more time goes by, some of the hurt and pain from the other night will start to dissipate," Jerry Stackhouse said, "and then we can really look back and see kind of what we were able to do this season.

"But right now, it's still kind of a tough time, still kind of reliving some of the moments of the series, what if and how could we have done things different."

Through the heartache, a sense of hope and excitement abounds. The Mavs are a legitimate title contender. Some would say the favorite going into the 2006-07 season.

The Mavs defeated defending champion San Antonio and Phoenix on their way to the NBA Finals. Both teams stood ahead of the Mavs in the Western Conference standings just one year ago.

The Mavs are no longer the hunters. They'll be the hunted. The Spurs' recent trade of Rasho Nesterovic is as much about matching up with the Mavs as it is about freeing up salary cap space.

Spurs' Horry Relishes Mavericks' Defeat

Robert Horry watched only the closing two minutes of Miami's clinching victory in the NBA Finals on Tuesday night. It was enough, however, to make him smile.

If Horry and the Spurs couldn't win another title, he at least was glad Dallas fell short in its quest to win its first.

"That's the first time I ever rooted for the East," Horry said. "You usually never root for the East, you root for the West. But the way (the Mavericks) acted, it just put a bad taste in my mouth.

"All the whining Dallas did, the way (owner Mark) Cuban acted, the way (assistant coach) Del Harris acted on the sideline a couple of times, I was happy to see Dallas lose."

While Cuban and Dallas coach Avery Johnson were criticized for their behavior after losing Game 5 of the Finals, Horry didn't like how the Mavericks acted while eliminating the Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals.

In addition to saying that Mavericks guard Jason Terry didn't deserve to be suspended for hitting Michael Finley in the groin, Cuban called Tim Duncan a "crybaby," labeled Spurs fans the "rudest" in the league, and called the River Walk "an ugly-ass, muddy-watered thing."

The Heat are champs, thanks in large part to Dwyane Wade. So where do they go from here? And what do the Mavs have to do to improve? Our experts look forward.

1. Will the Heat repeat?

Greg Anthony, ESPN Insider: Not sure they will, but they are the favorites. I believe Shaq has more left than he showed during the Finals. Pat Riley is the best in the league at motivating, and his ability to tweak the roster puts him in a class by himself. Most important, Dwyane Wade has only scratched the surface in terms of his abilities. Nothing can replace the confidence of being a champion.

Chris Broussard, ESPN Mag: No way I'll guarantee that, but they have as good a chance as anyone. NBA will be wide open next year. Miami, Dallas, S.A., Phoenix and Detroit will be legit contenders, and even Cleveland might sneak into the mix.

Ric Bucher, ESPN Mag: I'm still having a hard time computing that they won the first one. Although anything is clearly possible when you have Dwyane Wade, squeezing another championship run out of 'Zo and GP (not to mention Shaq) just seems too much to ask. And don't underestimate the importance those two played off the bench.

John Hollinger, ESPN Insider: Doubtful. They needed a lot of breaks to get a championship this year and there's a good chance Mourning and Payton will retire. Wade would have to raise his game yet another level for it to happen.

Tim Legler, ESPN Insider: Whether the Heat repeat will be determined by what additions they make to their bench. They must get younger and more athletic. They will face formidable obstacles in Detroit, Cleveland, S.A., Dallas and Phoenix, but as long as they have Wade and Shaq, they will contend.

Jim O'Brien, ESPN Insider: The Heat will not repeat next year. In my estimation, the Spurs and Pistons are the two best teams. They both got beat and will be totally refocused on winning back the trophy. They each have players that can do decent jobs guarding Wade, and O'Neal will be a year older.

Dan Shanoff, Page 2: Yes. The Finals were a breakthrough, showing the Heat what it takes to be a champion. Shaq's impact may erode by next June, but he didn't have the impact this week everyone thought he would anyway. The NBA is officially in the Wade Era.

Chris Sheridan, ESPN Insider: Hard to say yes to that one at this point because it's just now sinking in that Riley's monster trade last summer helped win him a title. Shaq was really diminished, Payton was cooked, so I don't know. But I'm starting to expect the Pistons to lose Ben Wallace, I don't think the Cavs are ready to take the next step yet, and nobody else in the East jumps out as being better than the Heat are now. So my answer is a definite maybe.

Ken Shouler, ESPN.com: I think they will repeat if they can steer clear of dissension and avoid nagging, aging injuries and missed games. Mourning will be 37, Payton 38 and Shaq 35 -- so Miami is semi-ancient at some key positions. But right now, there is no higher power in the league to dethrone them.

Marc Stein, ESPN.com: Sorry. Ask me in July or August after I've seen how Detroit, San Antonio and the other top contenders respond to the most unpredictable playoffs I can remember. I also want to see what the Heat do to keep the cast around Wade and Shaq fresh and whether Riley stays on as coach. Most of all, I want to see how Amare Stoudemire looks. Look how far Phoenix got without him.

Mavs Hungry for Another Chance

After Jason Terry shot himself into free agency. After the Mavericks said what happened in Miami stays in Miami. After all the fines and whines.

After a dismal collapse ended with everything going down the Dwyane.

After it all, the Mavericks held their heads high. They could point to so many things that defined their glorious, albeit one-step-short, season.

The franchise grew up a lot in the last nine months.

Another NBA season is in the books, and it was the best in Mavericks history. The Heat won the title Tuesday night at American Airlines Center. As much as Mavericks fans hated to see the Heat bathing in champagne (was it Chateau de Salvatore?) after Game 6, the better team always wins a best-of-7 series.

The Heat was "15 strong," as the players told us after the clincher. That was their motto all season, although they didn't publicize it much until the end.

Dwyane Wade proved he is one of the best players in the league, so good that a declining Shaquille O'Neal and a suspect supporting cast could ride in his wide wake to a title.

"You have to get down to get up, and we're definitely down right now," said Terry, who becomes a free agent July 1, when he will either re-sign with the Mavericks or consider outside offers. "This was an opportunity to achieve something great. It just wasn't our year."

And there's not a single guarantee that next year will be. But Miami also is guaranteed nothing. The Heat is an older team. The Mavericks are younger and, despite of Wade's greatness, better positioned to move forward.

The Finals Stage Made for Wade

In his first appearance in the NBA Finals, Wade left no doubt about who was the best player on the court. In leading the Heat to its first NBA championship in a six-game series victory over the Dallas Mavericks, Wade averaged 34.7 points and showcased an indomitable will, leading the Heat to four consecutive wins after Miami lost the first two games in Dallas.

He had a spellbinding performance in Game 3, when he scored 42 points with 13 rebounds and led a miraculous comeback from a 13-point deficit in the final six-plus minutes. And he had a winding final drive through four defenders at the end of Game 5.

He left an indelible mark, posting the third-best scoring average for a first-time Finals participant.

"You all witnessed it," Heat Coach Pat Riley said after ending an 18-year drought without a ring. "You all watched it. Players like that are hard to come by, and to watch them grow right in front of you. He's making his legacy in his third year. I mean, we are blessed to have him."

Once O'Neal was held to a playoff career-low five points in Game 2, Wade knew he couldn't sit back and watch his team fall. With O'Neal receiving constant double- and triple-teams, Wade was given the space to create and humiliate the Mavericks, who failed miserably when they were forced to focus their defense on Wade. "D-Wade told me they were going to keep doing that and he was going to take over the series," said O'Neal, who averaged just 13.7 points in this series -- almost 20 points below his first 24 games in the Finals. "He was unselfish about it. He kept people involved. He took high-percentage shots. He's a great, great player."

After fighting through a sinus infection and sluggishness in the first two games, Wade refused to let his team lose in Game 3, overcoming a left knee injury caused by a third-quarter collision with O'Neal to score 15 points in the final period. Whether he provided great theater, a classic psyche job or he really was hurting the next day -- when he appeared to hobble along and rode a flatbed cart to address the media at the podium -- was irrelevant because it merely added to his burgeoning legacy with another breathtaking performance in Game 4. The Mavericks appeared dumbfounded by the ease with which he picked his spots during incredible offensive spurts with tough turnaround jumpers (which Dallas players had questioned his ability to make) and relentless drives that resulted in a hoop, a foul or both.

Dallas, which emerged as a much-improved defensive team this season and managed to throttle the defending champion San Antonio Spurs and high-scoring Phoenix Suns, disrupted Wade for almost three quarters in Game 5, as he started the game 3 for 15. But when Wade determined he wasn't going to be stopped, the Mavericks were at his mercy. He drilled bank shots and pull-up jumpers over multiple defenders and purchased real estate on the foul line, where he connected on an NBA Finals-record 21 free throws -- including the game-winners with 1.9 seconds left -- in the 101-100 overtime victory.

Brown Out, Thomas In

NEW YORK -- Larry Brown is no longer the NBA's dead man walking. His "dream job" as coach of the New York Knicks is over, finally ending what may have been the most drawn-out firing in sports history.

Now Isiah Thomas gets the job of coaching the overpriced, underachieving roster he created.

The Knicks put Brown out of his coaching misery Thursday, ending weeks of uncertainty by firing the Hall of Fame coach with four years and a reported $40 million left on his contract.

Thomas, the team president and general manger, will replace him.

In Brown's lone season in New York, the Knicks stumbled to a 23-59 record -- second worst in the NBA and matching the most losses in club history. But Brown's public feud with Stephon Marbury and criticism of other players may have angered owner James Dolan more than the losing.

"Larry has had a long and storied career. We hired him last summer with the expectation that he would be with the Knicks for a long time," Dolan said in a statement. "Sometimes decisions work and sometimes they don't.

A Tale of Two Series

DALLAS, June 20 -- After Game 3 concluded, we all knew that Dallas had let one get away when they blew a 13-point, fourth-quarter lead. It was just one game though, and the predominant sentiment was that they were still the better team. We thought that Avery Johnson would light a fire under his team and that they would recover quickly. They might still close out the series in five, we thought. Maybe six.

We were dead wrong.

The six and a half minute mark in the fourth quarter was not only a turning point in the game, it was the turning point of the series. It took the trophy out of Mark Cuban's hands and put it in those of Micky Arison. It gave Alonzo Mourning the opportunity to have his first drink in six years while Mavs fans cried as they left the building.

In the end, the setting really didn't matter.

It didn't matter who had home court in any particular game. Sure the home team won the first five games for the first time in 30 years, but that was just a coincidence. The Mavs were the better team before that moment and the Heat were the better team after it. It's that simple.

"That Game 3 was big," Dirk Nowitzki said. "If we win that, the series is probably pretty much over, and we just maybe were starting to celebrate too early ... We didn't execute and we didn't finish the game."

After that, they had chances to win Game 5. They were right there in Game 6. They had a few stretches, like the nine minutes tonight, where they played well. But, they could never keep it going. They could never get all eight players in their rotation clicking at once. They couldn't even get their three best players playing well at the same time.

Jason Terry was big in Games 1 and 5. Dirk Nowitzki was at his best in Games 2 and 6. Josh Howard had a strong Game 5, until his last-minute meltdown. If you're going to win the NBA Finals, you need your best players to show up every night. That didn't happen.

Even in Game 6, the Mavs' stars were hit-or-miss, mostly miss. Howard scored eight points in the fourth quarter, but was a non-factor until then. Nowitzki was strong through the first 36 minutes, but scored just two points and shot 0-for-4 from the floor in the final period.

Jason Terry, probably the Mavs' series MVP through the first five games, was probably the biggest disappointment on Tuesday.

He started out hot, hitting of his four field goal attempts in the first quarter, scoring nine points. After that, he made just three of his 21 shots, scoring only seven points in the final 36 minutes. He missed his final 11 attempts from the field, including the one that could have tied it in the final seconds. He took more shots than anyone else in the game.

"We had our chances," Terry said. "Same as just about every game in this series, and we didn't capitalize."

Stackhouse's treys gave Dallas a 16-point halftime lead and it held at least a 12-point edge the rest of the way. Dirk Nowitzki had 26 points and 16 boards, Stackhouse scored 19 and Jason Terry added 16 and nine assists. The Mavs can move within one win of the NBA championship when the series shifts to Miami for Game 3 on Tuesday.
